Character History:
Pre-Series
Born and raised in the small town of Bethel, Texas. The picture painted of Kate's life up until six months prior to the start of the series, is almost perfect. Raised as the only child of Jacob and Jennifer Fuller, the only upheaval the young Kate ever faced was the adoption of her brother Scott: Something Kate later admits to resenting at the ripe old age of nine. Her father was a well-respected Pastor in the church, her mother the doting wife who stood by his side and despite the early difficulties Kate had accepting Scott as part of their family, a brother whom she accepted and grew to love in the intervening years.
Season One
[The events of Season One take place over the course of one day.]
When we first meet Kate and her family, we see that her life of blissful innocence has begun to unravel and soon discover that much of her sheltered reality was born from ignorance. Six months after the death of Jennifer Fuller in a car accident (in which Jacob was behind the wheel), Jacob announces to the family that he's bought an RV and they're heading to Mexico.
From the outset, the tension between them is clear, Kate expressing her concern to Scott that their Father is falling apart while Scott is telling Kate she needs to relax and stop trying to be their Mom. The whole way to Mexico, Kate is trying to get her father to talk about why they're taking the trip, where they're going or when they will be coming home and she soon starts to see that Jacob intends for the family to be gone much longer than a couple of weeks when he suggests that they could catch up on their studies, or go back to home-schooling.
When she discovers that her Dad pawned his wedding ring in order to buy the RV they're traveling in, Kate starts to ask more questions about the night her mother died. Her fathers' hostile refusal to even discuss the accident, appears to raise Kate's suspicions and with her faith in her father shaken, her immediate response is to text her boyfriend and ask him to come and get her.
Kyle's arrival causes friction when they're caught by Jacob and Scott before the two can escape, Kate quick to send him away when he starts a physical altercation with her father. Before he leaves, he lets slip that Jacob has abandoned the church. He admits to his children that he's not sure he believes in God anymore and a conflicted and confused Kate, remains with her family but with every intention of figuring out what's really going on with her father.
[Little did the family know that the person who came to collect Kate wasn't Kyle at all, but somebody named Carlos who was using a kind of glamor to look like him.]
As they continue towards the border, Kate presses her father about leaving the church, preaching the very same lines to him about God that he'd told her, her whole life. Their conversation is cut short when the RV breaks down and after discovering that Jacob never bothered to buy a toolkit, he sets about finding somebody who can help him repair it.
After his attempts at repairing the RV are met with frustration, Jacob goes inside the bar and has a few too many drinks. When Kate goes in to retrieve him, she finds him drunk and after leaving the bar upset, she returns to the RV to go through his belongings. There, she discovers a shortened version of her mother's accident report that shows the cause of death as Vehicular Manslaughter.
Distraught, and now concerned that perhaps her father had been drinking the night of the accident; Kate makes a call to the police, pretending to be an insurance adjustor who needs them to email her a copy of the official police report from her mothers' accident. While doing so, her drunken father and his companion finally manage to repair the RV and almost immediately runs over Kate. While she's more shaken than harmed, she does take control and sends her dad to sleep it off while she continues to drive towards the nearest motel so she can figure out what to do next.
The Fullers first cross paths with the Gecko Brothers as they pull into the Dew Drop Inn, Seth blocking their way through as he sizes up Kate behind the wheel before letting them pass. Upon arriving in their room, Kate informs her father that she really does want to turn around and go home because she no longer feels safe with him and can't trust him. With hurt feelings and worry hanging in the air, Kate leaves the room to go for a swim.
Down by the pool, Kate checks her email and reads over the accident report. Her relief is evident when she discovers that her father wasn't drunk at the time of the accident but takes another blow when the report suggests that the reason for the crash may have been because her father had been in an altercation with his wife, one so severe that it left lacerations on his arms. In a flashback to Kate's memory, we see Kate spying on her father praying over her mother in bed. When Kate asks what's wrong with her, she's told that she's suffering from a migraine. Back in the present, Kate quietly asks herself what her Father is hiding, now certain in her own mind that there was a lot more going on with her parents.
The second time Kate crosses paths with a Gecko brother is when Richie comes down to the pool. After asking him for a cigarette (though she admits she doesn't smoke), the two of them start to talk and Richie tells her that when he first saw her in the pool, it looked like she was bleeding, that she was hurting inside. She starts to open up to Richie when without warning, he says; 'You think he killed her. Whoever she is, she didn't have migraines.' Shocked and scared, Kate runs back to her room where she finds her father and brother being held at gunpoint but when she turns to run, Richie blocks her in.
The family learns that The Gecko Brothers; two armed criminals who are wanted for Robbery and Murder, want to use their family and the RV they're traveling in, to get across the border into Mexico. Held at gunpoint, they have no choice but to go along with their plans. Seth at least promises Kate that as long as she does whatever he says, she'll get out of this without any bumps or scrapes - words that will come back to haunt him down the line. Before they can even get on the road, everything almost comes undone when a Texas Ranger (Freddie Gonzalez) who has been hunting the Brothers for killing his Mentor and Partner, finds them at the motel. A gunfight breaks out, with Kate caught in the middle and to both brothers credit, they do their best to shield Kate from the spray of bullets as they make their escape.
On the road to the Mexican Border, Jacob is behind the wheel of the RV with Seth by his side, while Richie keeps an eye on the Fuller children. At Scott's quiet urging, Kate distracts Richie by getting him to pray with her and Scott pulls a gun that even Kate and her Father were shocked to discover that he owned. Seth joins in and a standoff ensues, he with a gun to Kate's head and Scott with one to Richie's. Smooth talking on Seth's part sees Scott lower his weapon but Richie looks like he's about to shoot Scott when Jacob creates a distraction by slamming the RV into the car in front of him.
Jacob tries to resolve the problem with the driver of the car and when that appears to not be working, Jacob goes 'old testament' on the driver, knocks him out and drags him on board the RV. Needing to get both the car and the RV across the border, Scott is told to take the car because according to Jacob, lying isn't one of Kate's strong suits. An argument breaks out and Richie reveals that Kate thinks her father killed her mother. While Kate denies it, Jacob is clearly shaken by the revelation but with no time to waste, they cover the other driver with a blanket, while Seth and Richie hide in the bathroom of the RV with Kate and Scott departs the RV to drive the car in front.
Scott's attempts to get across the border go horribly wrong and he's asked to go inside the offices with one of the border patrol Officers. The RV doesn't appear to be doing much better, when Seth is forced to knock out Richie who wants to start shooting people and the Officer speaking with Jacob overhears the commotion. From inside the bathroom, it appears like everything is about to get bloody, Seth holding his gun on the bathroom door ready to shoot the Officer when in a surprise twist for the Gecko brothers; Another Officer boards with Scott and makes it clear to Seth that he knows exactly who he is and that he's been sent there by the people he's working with.
[The officer is once again, Carlos using a type of Glamor.]
Realizing they have the checkpoint covered, Seth gets behind the wheel of the RV while Jacob joins his children. Here, he tells his children that the accident didn't occur because he swerved for a deer as he had told them but because they were arguing. He tells them that there had been trouble in the marriage for some time and while he could have gotten help, he put his faith in the lord and because that didn't help, it's why he feels he has lost his way.
Things almost go wrong again before they can make it across the border to Mexico, when the tenacious Ranger Gonzalez tries to stop the RV before it can pass but several gunmen create a distraction which allows them to get away. Soon after this, they arrive at a strip club in Mexico called the Titty Twister, which is where the Geckos are supposed to be meeting their contact. The Fullers are told that once they finish making their deal, they're free to go on their merry way.
As they move together into the Strip Club, the group is accosted by a lewd Greeter who suggests that Kate could be on the menu of ladies for the evening. Seth steps in and tells him she's not on offer and when the Greeter persists, Seth breaks his nose. (Much to the awe of Kate.) Once inside, The Brothers appear far less threatening than they did on the bus; Seth getting a table and drinks for the three Fuller members and himself as Richie scopes the place out. Jacob's revelation has left tension between the family and despite his insistence that his children are too young to drink, in defiance of their father, both siblings join Seth in a round of shots.
Seth tries to liken this 'rag tag bunch of ramblers' to a family in a way and using Kate's faith as an avenue for conversation, he asks her if she can find it in her heart to forgive him (in a very jovial way mind you) for the people he killed in trying to escape. While Kate hesitates, she does admit that she could and tension continues to simmer between the Fullers. Seth then asks Kate what's the worst thing she's ever done but it's Scott who chimes in and it's revealed - much to Seth's amusement - that Kate French-Kissed Kyle in the back of the church.
While Seth goes off to get himself into a fight with the man whose nose he broke, Kate and Scott get into another argument with their father, Scott appearing to be just as hurt and angry with him as Kate has been, due to all the lies he's been telling them about their mother's death. Angry with her father, Kate announces she's going to find Richie and when Scott points out that he's even crazier than Seth? Kate quips back that at least he hasn't lied to them.
On her way, she encounters a man she briefly crossed paths with back at the bar where her Dad got drunk. He introduces himself as 'Sex Machine' and immediately hits on her (again) and shows her the gun he wears on his crotch. (No really. It's a thing. She makes a nice crack about how she bets it shoots blanks.)
When Kate does find Richie, he's with a stripper whom he's quick to dismiss and the two start talking, much like they had back by the pool. Kate gently urges Richie to let them leave and he tells her he doesn't want her to go. There's an unexpected and yet undeniable chemistry between them and as the conversation becomes almost intimate in nature, they share a kiss. Before things can go further, Seth walks in, announcing; 'The preachers' daughter strikes again' and an embarrassed Kate, rushes from the alcove they were in with Richie chasing after her.
Kate finds Richie again when he's throwing knives with his brother and grabs a target and holds it above her head. She announces to Seth that if Richie can hit the target, she and her family get to leave with the keys to the RV. Richie is reluctant at first, appearing to not want to hurt Kate but when he's handed a knife that he lost back in Texas; somethings shifts in Richie and he nails the target with ease. Before she can get the keys and leave, all the customers are told to sit down because the main show is about to begin.
Carlos (as himself this time) gets up on stage and not only does Seth recognize him, but Richie informs him that he's the man who gave him the knife he's been carrying around. Carlos introduces Santanico Pandemonium and a woman on stage begins to dance with a two headed snake. The moment Richie lays eyes on her, he recognizes her as the woman he's been dreaming about; muttering over and over that 'she's real'. Santanico zeroes in on Richie and the connection between the two draws the attention of an increasingly suspicious Seth and appalled and arguably jealous, Kate.
The whole show gets interrupted however when Ranger Gonzales shows up and stabs Riche through the hand. The freshly spilled blood and the sudden outburst of violence appears to have an effect on Santanico who without warning... sprouts a pair of snake-like fangs and launches herself at Freddie. In the chaos that follows, all of the people who work in the club begin to do the same as Santanico, and the Titty Twister turns into a bloodbath. The doors are barred making escape impossible and as the Gecko brothers try to fight for survival, the Fullers retreat to the corner of the club, trying to ride out the insanity.
Eventually the fight dies down and the creatures that Seth believes may be Vampires retreat. Those who survived: The Geckos, The Fullers and of all people, Sex Machine are left alone in the bloody mess to try and figure out what just happened. They quickly realize that there's no easy way out of the club and they need to formulate a plan to survive. Drawing from his wrestling magazines, (Yes. I know.) Scott speculates that the creatures might be Mayan or Aztec in nature. Sex Machine introduces himself as Aiden Tanner, a Professor who specializes in this kind of thing. He got involved with tracking Richie & Seth when Freddie Gonzalez had questions about the ritualistic carvings left on bodies that he believed were killed by none other than Richie.
Tanner confirms that basically, the creatures are Mexican Vampires, otherwise known as Culebra. He gives them all a history lesson on the myths surrounding this 'blood cult' and they set about staking the half dead and starting to turn Culebra, before they can start attacking them. The group then sets about making as many stakes as they can, wanting to be ready for when the Culebra who disappeared come back for more.
They do return and as fighting breaks out around them, Kate appears to be frozen with fear. It's only when she sees her own father about to be killed that she springs into action and significantly, for her, takes a life for the first time when she disembowels the Culebra with a chainsaw. Santanico returns, trying to convince Richie to trust her but the believed to be dead - as we saw him get bitten by Santanico - Ranger Gonzalez, shows up and shoots Richie. Santanico drags Richie away and in the aftermath we realize that Scott is also missing.
After a vote goes against Jacob, it's decided that Freddie needs to be left behind because from what they have all seen, getting bitten by a Culebra means you will turn into one yourself. After gathering up all the weapons they have left, Kate, Seth, Jacob and Tanner, all make their way into what Tanner explained was a 'people juicer', so they could try and find Scott and Richie.
Getting off to a bad start, Tanner manages to drop the bag full of weapons he was carrying and Jacob hurts himself coming down the trapdoor. With Seth and Tanner leading the way, Kate helps Jacob to walk as they navigate their way under the club, Tanner continuing his history lesson as they move. Kate says to her father that she guesses she shouldn't be afraid, because if she dies she'll go to heaven and get to be with Momma. Jacob stops and tells Kate that there's something he needs to tell her, but before he can, they come under attack.
Seth and Tanner manage to escape with ease but Kate, slowed down by Jacob's injury and refusing to leave him behind, is about to be captured (and likely eaten). Tanner urges Seth to close the door but unable to sacrifice the others, Seth rushes forward and helps Kate and Jacob into the safety of a small room. Kate then thanks Tanner for his lack of efforts, by kneeing him in the balls.
It only looks to be getting worse when they get taken by surprise by an armed man named Sergeant Frost. He tells them he has no idea how long he's been down here and it's apparent from watching him that his time hiding from the Culebra (and PTSD from his time as an Army Ranger) has left him unstable.
Inside a room that appears to be full of stock for the club and the belongings of past victims, he tells them if they want to pass through, they have to play The Wheel of Misfortune; Spin the wheel and see what you get. In a lucky turn of events (finally), they get 'Shopping Spree' and he allows them to grab whatever they can carry in 10 minutes and then 'ease on down the road'. He tells the other that the temple showed him things and said that 'if hell has circles, you just stepped onto the first rung'.
Kate pleads with the man for his help as he knows the tunnels better than all of them. In a poignant moment that gets repeated throughout the Series, she tells him that; 'My family might survive if we stick together. Because we're better together. When we're alone, we're lost.' While he does appear to be swayed by her words, it's not enough to make him agree and he sends them on their way.
As they move on, Kate begins to hear what sounds like the voice of her mother, calling her name. She appears to get separated from the others and turns into a hallway that shows her what looks like her mother, sitting on her bed. The vision of Kate's mother tells her that she stood before the congregation and lied; She said he saved her life but you can't save a life that's not worth saving. Kate watches as her mother takes a handful of pills and as she screams, she snaps back into the present where Jacob is asking if she's alright. A moment later, what looks like a dark, twisted version of a Culebra, grabs her and takes her away.
Kate wakes up, tied to an altar with a group of similar Culebra standing over her. They're about to sacrifice her when a stake attached to a chain, fires through the air and hits one. Seth, Jacob and Tanner have come to her rescue and the men use UV lights to try and keep the Culebra away from Kate. Jacob attempts to untie her as Tanner and Seth fight off the Culebra. Just as it looks like they're safe, more Culebra come and now it's Sergeant Frost who comes to the rescue. He tells the others how to get away and as they make their escape, he blows himself up along with the ones who were coming back to sacrifice Kate.
The group continues to race through the tunnels, hitting yet another dead end where Tanner tries to decipher the carvings that have been left on the walls. He pushes one and a pathway opens up in the tunnels, leading to a set of stairs that go up. They follow them and find what they believe is the exit to the Temple where Seth spies Richie looking perfectly fine, going with Santanico onto the RV. This is where the group chooses to part ways as Scott is still trapped inside the temple. Seth goes after Richie and Tanner says that he'll help Kate & Jacob to find Scott.
As they walk together, Kate tells her father that she knows about the pills; that her mother tried to commit suicide. That's why he was driving so fast that night - he was tryingto race her to a hospital and that's why they were fighting. Jacob tells her that he didn't want them to ever know what she'd done and finally there appears to be a peace between father and daughter, now that they understand each other. Here they run into Ranger Gonzalez again, who tells the Fullers that Scott has been turned into a Culebra. Jacob insists that he needs to see for himself and despite Freddie's insistence that it's suicide to stay down here, Kate and Jacob thank him for his concern but continue on their way. Freddie tries to let them leave but he can't bring himself to abandon them and runs to catch up.
In search of Scott, Kate thanks Freddie coming back and they start to talk about how Freddie came to be involved. He told Kate that he was tracking a Serial Killer and that while he thought it was Richie, he now thinks that Richie was being controlled. Kate agrees, explaining that Richie is a tortured soul and who knows what kind of horrible things he has seen. Freddie appears surprised and when Kate asks why, he shakes his head and simply states that 'she sees the good in people'.
They come across a room with an horrendous smell, the four of them gagging as they move inside and they can hear something moving in the shadows as we see glimpses of ancient Culebra. Kate is attacked and the four of them get separated, Kate running off with Tanner in pursuit while Freddie stays to help Jacob. Frightened and seemingly alone, Kate is found by Tanner who tells her he'll help her find her Dad but they have to get out of there.
Tanner leads Kate into a room like the one she was in before, complete with an altar. Confused, she asks him what's going on but as he starts to talk to her about the benefits of human sacrifice, he knocks her out. When she awakens, she's been tied to the Altar, this time by Tanner. Meanwhile, Jacob and Freddie are talking and they realize that while Richie did kill the Bank Teller at the Inn, he wasn't responsible for all the other murders. They realize that it's Tanner and that Kate is in terrible danger.
Kate has learned the same by now, as Tanner explains how Carlos came to him and set him on his path of Murder. She struggles against her restraints on the alter, cussing Tanner out despite how hopeless her situation seems. As Tanner taunts her, Kate manages to free herself of her restraints just as Freddie rushes in to rescue her. Freddie cuts down Tanner and tells Kate that they found Scott and he'll take her to her family.
When they arrive, Kate discovers that her Father has been bitten by Scott. She turns on her brother, sending him away and yet still, despite knowing what will happen to her Dad now, is determined that they can somehow find a way to be happy and insists as much to her father. Jacob struggles as Kate and Freddie lead him through the tunnels and eventually collapses against a wall. He tells Kate that he won't be able to live life as a Culebra and that he wants to die.
Kate tells him that he's just selfish, that he just wants to be with Momma. Jacob points out that he's not even sure her mother will be waiting for him in Heaven because suicide is a sin. She says that he can't believe in a god that would be that cruel. He's inside each and every one of us. He tells her that's what this whole trip has been about. Finding god again. 'Who knew I would find him in the walls of this place and in my baby girls eyes'. He begs Kate not to let him become a monster; to end his suffering, to send him home and while Freddie says she doesn't have to do this; With tears in her eyes, they say that they love each other and she takes a stake and drives it into his heart the moment his eyes turn into that of a snake.
Kate goes to leave the temple with Freddie and we don't see them for a time until Freddie returns to Kate with the keys to the RV. The two had hatched a plan to get the brothers and other Culebra to leave Freddie's family alone and to get Kate a way out of there. Freddie asks if she can get back on her own and she admits that she has no idea where she's going, but that after tonight, she thinks she's going to be okay.
She and Freddie part ways but Kate doesn't leave. With nobody left, she waits by the RV. Seth walks out of the Titty Twister, also alone and she asks him if he wants some company. There's a quiet moment as she looks at him before he nods. He tells her they're not taking the RV and her response is 'hell no' before the two get into a Corvette and drive off in a cloud of dust.
Season Two
Season Two picks up three months later with Seth and Kate rushing into a rundown, cheap looking motel room in Mexico as they hide from the police. As the sirens die down, there's a knock on the door and an awkward night shift Manager who appears to have a specific interest in Kate, asks if she's okay. She assures him that she's fine, that she was just reading her bible and after some bumbling and inquiries on his part, he goes on his way.
With him gone, Seth and Kate start to bicker and it would appear that life for these two has been downhill ever since the Corvette they took from The Titty Twister was stolen. The job they pulled today only managed to net them a bunch of canceled checks and when Seth explains that things went wrong because the manager tried to play the hero, Kate tells him that this is why he needs a partner, not just a getaway driver.
Seth pushes back and Kate lets out a lot of her frustration regarding how bad things have been these last few months. She reiterates the fact that they need money so they can get a new ID, so they can get out of here. She tells Seth that despite saying she would try to forget about him, she wants to try and find her brother. Seth tells Kate that Scott is dead, that even if he's not, he is.
Kate makes a snide remark about Seth 'forgetting about Richie' and Seth's response is to reach for his gear and go to shoot up. Kate doesn't look overly happy and yet, she doesn't hesitate to move in and help him when he can't find a vein, suggesting this is hardly the first time it's happened. As he passes out, she props him up with pillows so that he won't choke on his own vomit and leaves the motel. Kate gets a gun, loads it with the look of somebody who is now very familiar with weapons and puts it in her bag before she heads out.
She heads to a market and goes to a little Botanica where she asks a young man by the name of Rafa some questions, posing as a college student. He suggests she's a little young for that and tells her he believes she's a missionary who has come to preach the word of god to all the 'little brown people'. Kate pulls out the very bible she claimed to have been reading to the Motel Clerk but when she opens it up to show Rafa, we see sketches of Santanico and other symbols from back inside the Temple under the Titty Twister.
Rafa leads Kate out back where she sees people praying at an altar where a painting of Santanico hangs above it. She starts to speak with Rafa about Culebra, and as somebody comes ready to attack Kate, she turns on Rafa with a stake in her hand, announcing: I'm not here to convert you, so don't try to convert me. The other man backs off at Rafa's urging and she tells him that her brother is a Culebra and she wants to find a way to help him feed without killing people the same way that he (Rafa) does.
Rafa explains to Kate that Culebra must feed on people (because they need blood) but that it's not hard to find those who might deserve it. He points out a collector who is taking something akin to protection money from the various business owners in the market. This gives Kate the idea for her and Seth to rob them and she heads back to the motel to tell him her plan. She arrives moments after Seth has staked the Night Clerk at the Motel (yep a Culebra), unaware of what had happened in her absence, she tells him she's got a score for them and goes to take a shower.
We see flashes of Seth staking out the market and then later, back at the motel, Seth gives Kate a door handle and a bump key and tells her to try and get the lock open using it. They talk about the score and she makes mention of her contact, Rafa. Seth gets pissy (jealous?! IDEK) about the mere mention of him before the two of them catch a news report on television stating that the burnt bodies of Seth and Richie Gecko have been found in a car that went over a cliff.
Seth says that Richard must be behind it and Kate goes back to trying to figure out the bump key. When she fails, he makes a snarky remark at her and she fires back 'no wonder he left you'. Seth pushes back and announces they're calling the whole thing off because she's not ready.
Losing her temper, Kate challenges Seth and points out that he's just angry because Richie left him and he doesn't know what to do with himself anymore. Seth says he didn't leave, he was taken and Kate calls him on the fact that pretending the Culebra don't exist, won't make them go away. She throws in Seth's face that she didn't just lose her brother down in the temple, she lost her dad too. Explaining that he begged her to kill him and she drove a stake through his heart and yet you don't see her shooting herself up with poison.
This sees Seth soften and we realize, she's never told him any of this before. A moment later, Kate successfully manages to use the bump key and the moment finishes on a lighter note.
Later we see Kate with Rafa, after she's lured somebody down into a back alley so that Rafa can feed. She doesn't appear to be at all shaken by the act and if anything, seems almost flirtatious with Rafa after he's just killed a man. The next time we see them, Rafa is in the Motel room with them as they go over the plan for the heist. Seth and Rafa engage in a minor pissing contest but otherwise, the plan seems solid. Rafa however, conceals the fact that he's Culebra from Seth.
We cut to a shot of Seth and Kate in the car, ready to put their plan into action. Seth tells Kate that this is a good score and he admits he hasn't made this easy on her and even thanks her for putting up with his shit. With Rafa on look-out, Kate heads into a hairdresser where the money collected by the enforcers is kept in a back room. She makes an excuse to wash her hands and goes to work on getting the door between the hairdresser and another building unlocked for Seth. The bump key won't work and the plan looks like it's going to fail. In a moment of desperation, Kate picks up a fire extinguisher and smashes the lock before heading back out into the salon.
After Seth has finished pulling the job, he rushes into the salon as a woman starts doing Kate's hair and tells her it's time to go. Leaving money on the counter, she rushes to leave when the Hairdresser, realizing something is off, reaches for a shotgun. Seth pulls a weapon of his own before she can and delivers a speech about how what's hers, is now his and there's nothing she can do about it.
There's a look of excitement on Kate's face as Seth and her start to make their escape but it quickly vanishes as we cut to Rafa and see him get shot through the neck, spraying both Seth & Kate with blood. The towering man who shot them is in fact, somebody who's working for one of the Nine Lords; The former captors of Santanico and the ones who rule over the Culebra. He's looking for Richie and is about to kill Kate when Rafa, a Culebra himself, heals and attacks the man to try and allow Kate and Seth a chance to get away. As they do so, we see Rafa die in front of a screaming Kate, before they can drive off.
In the car on the way out of town, Kate, still covered in Rafa's blood, looks extremely shaken. Seth starts ranting at her about the fact that her little street rat, Rafa was a Culebra, telling her he knew this whole score was a bad idea from the start. Ripping into her, he tells her that everyone she ever loved, is dead. Kate screams at Seth to stop the car and he shoves some money and a fake passport at her and says 'you wanna go play in the darkness little miss sunshine? Be my guest.' She says she's not ready but he still leaves Kate on the side of the road and starts to drive off but can't. Backing the car up, he gives her all the money from their score, the car and then leaves on foot.
An indeterminant amount of time later, we see that Kate has made her way back to her family home in Bethel. She found Scott who says he thought she'd come home sooner. She admits she didn't see the point until she had a reason to. She'd heard from somebody she used to go to school with that Scott has been seen hanging around the school. She tells him she wants to help him but Scott pushes her away (emotionally and physically) before fleeing into the night.
Determined to find her brother, Kate calls an unknown somebody and leaves a message where she tells them about what's going on with Scott and asks them for help. She eventually finds Scott having a party with some people he went to school with and discovers that he'd killed one of their friends by 'accident'. Upset and yet still determined to help her brother, Kate agrees to help Scott bury the body. They take her back to their home in Bethel and Scott starts to dig a hole in their backyard.
As Kate begins to emotionally fall apart, she takes a broom and smashes the frame of a family photo before crumpling to the ground and crying. She sees a vision of Rafa who urges her to get up but she tells him that she can't. He tells her that she came to him because of her brother and calls her on the fact that she's already giving up. She says he killed her friend, she can't help him because he's a monster. Rafa urges her to try with Scott before somebody else starts whispering in his ear. Kate gets up, turns back to look at Rafa, but he's gone.
Kate returns outside to finish burying the body. She starts to tell Scot about Rafa, wanting to show him that he can learn to control his cravings. Scott tells Kate that when he fed on her friend, he didn't just consume her blood, but her soul. He said she was just practice, that he can control himself now. Scott tells Kate that he's not going to kill her, he's going to protect her the only way that he knows how. The fangs come out, Kate screams, hits him with a shovel and tries to get away which is when the person she called for help shows up to save her: Ranger Freddie Gonzalez.
Scott tries to attack Freddie but he manages to secure him in some kind of, self-staking contraption to keep him from getting away. Freddie tells Kate that he's been watching the house, that he saw her helping Scott bury a body. Freddie tells Scott that he knows he was back at the Twister with the other Culebra and Scott's not going anywhere until he tells him what they're all up to. Freddie has been on the trail of a murderer after he found a mass grave full of bodies that he believes were killed by a Culebra. Scott offers nothing to Freddie in return and Kate is very much on edge, scared that Freddie might kill her brother. Kate finds out that Sex Machine is still alive and that he came to Freddie's house looking for a codex. At Kate's urging, Scott tells him that Sex Machine is a nobody who is just trying to impress the boss. Kate speculates that the whole reason he killed her friend was as part of some initiation. Scott doesn't exactly deny it but he doesn't admit to it either.
When Freddie goes outside, Kate tells Scott to stop fighting her. He in turn tells her to stop trying to save him. She tells him that he's her brother and she loves him but Scott tells Kate that she's wasting her time. Kate says that 'true love is loving the unlovable' which is when Freddie returns. He uses a piece of obsidian to cut himself and Scott so they can undergo something called a blood exchange. This allows Freddie to see everything that Scott has seen, like he's looking into his soul and his memories. Scott admits that the bonds (the very ones that Richie & Seth stole in a bank robbery in Season One) are part of some kind of map and that while he doesn't know what it's all about, he warns that; whatever it is, you can't stop it.
Freddie disappears again and Kate and Scott continue to talk. She admits to Scott that she hated him when he first came into their family. She felt that Scott came along and ruined their perfect family because it was different after he arrived. She couldn't even say his name which was the whole reason they started calling him Scott. She told him that she hated him and that she knew it was a sin. She goes on to say that she knows that God forgives her because God is love and that love can change anyone. It can even change him.
Scott tells Kate that he's already been changed. She says she knows and that what she's trying to say is; 'I love you no matter what you are, because I love who you are.' He reminds her that he eats people and she tells him that they can live with that, that they have to at least try. Scott apologizes to Kate for killing her friend and he appears legitimately upset. He again tells her that he couldn't help it, that he was just, so hungry.
Swayed by his words and the fact that she can see that he's bleeding, Kate removes the stake from the contraption and unchains his hands. He asks if she can really forgive her and Kate tells that she's not the one who needs to forgive him, he has to forgive himself. With that said, she walks away to go find Freddie who is pouring over a book with information on the Killer he's been tracking. He asks Kate for her help and she tells him that they both will, assures him that Scott is ready to talk now. No sooner has she said that than they hear Scott making his escape. When Freddie asks Kate what she did, she simply states; 'I believed him.'
Kate and Freddie return to the shack where Scott and his friends had been partying. There they find the bodies of the other boys who had been drinking with Scott that night. They'd all had their throats ripped out and Scott had strung them up to the rafters. Staring at the bodies, Kate asks Freddie to teach her how to use the weapons he made for hunting Culebra. He asks her if she's sure that she wants that and Kate tells Freddie that Scott's made his choice and the next time she sees him, she's going to make hers.
Timeline: Season Two, Episode Six (End of Episode)
Character History:
